Nielsen Buys DoubleVerify, and Measurement Gets Even More Consolidated

Nielsen is acquiring DoubleVerify for $2.15 billion, combining its audience measurement business with DV’s ad verification, brand safety, and fraud detection capabilities. The deal, expected to close by early 2027, would create a company generating more than $4 billion annually and serving clients responsible for over $300 billion in ad spend.

For marketers, the combined platform could simplify planning, verification, and outcomes measurement across television and digital media. The bigger concern is independence. DoubleVerify has long positioned itself as a neutral referee, and advertisers will be watching closely to see whether that credibility survives under Nielsen. With Integral Ad Science also taken private recently, ad measurement continues to consolidate around a fewer major companies.

A Tech Founder’s Drive Toward a ‘Million Mammograms’

As a tech founder and breast cancer survivor, Mindie Kaplan is on a one-woman crusade to get a million mammograms scheduled by 2028 through a movement she created, Million Mammograms. She’s driving the initiative by boldly bearing herself in a uniquely feminine way on national billboards in 40 markets, including Times Square, London, and Dubai. This global PSA campaign is changing narratives for women around shame, simultaneously celebrating femininity and early detection.

Spotify’s Skip Button Hasn’t Scared Advertisers Yet

Spotify is testing a feature that lets some Premium users skip podcast ads, sponsorships, and promotions. Advertisers are taking a wait-and-see approach, especially since skipped ads still count as delivered and Acast says only about 10% of listeners use skip functions.

Spotify says the feature may never become permanent, but its decision to protect Spotify-sold ads while making other ads easier to skip deserves attention.

Google’s Search Data Problem: Share It, Protect It, or Delay It

Regulators across the U.S., UK, and EU want Google to share search data with competitors, giving smaller engines access to the queries and behavioral signals needed to improve their results. The problem is that privacy laws often require personal data to be anonymized, while Google argues that supposedly anonymous search data can still be re-identified.

That creates a convenient regulatory conflict. Competition authorities want useful data shared, while privacy regulators impose standards that could make the data far less useful. Contracts, audits, and access controls could reduce the risk, but European privacy authorities have historically rejected similar arguments from the advertising industry.

My guess is Google will debate the definitions for years, AI will make anonymization even more difficult, and rivals will receive little data of meaningful value. Google remains very good at regulation by delay.

Newsmax Pays $67 Million

Newsmax will pay $67 million to settle Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit over false claims aired after the 2020 election. Internal communications showed employees questioned those allegations while the network continued promoting them publicly.

Personally, I can’t stand Newsmax. I only wish the settlement were $67 billion so we could move on with our lives and never hear about them again.
