The Latest Gospel

Netflix Shakes Up Its Ads Leadership

Netflix is making a major change to its advertising team, parting ways with VP of Ads Product Jon Whitticom, who helped build the company’s ad tech operation from its early days. Ads President Amy Reinhard said Marc Heneghan will lead the product unit on an interim basis while Netflix searches externally for a replacement.

Whitticom, previously chief product officer at FreeWheel, helped launch the Netflix Ads Suite and expand buying through partners including Google, The Trade Desk, and Magnite. His departure comes as Netflix expects advertising revenue to reach $3 billion this year, nearly double 2025.

One thing worth watching: I have absolutely no proof or documentation of this, but there’s been a lot of swirl around Netflix’s technology strategy and what its next big acquisition could be. I’ve heard several companies floated as potential targets, specifically on the SSP side. I have no idea how real any of it is, but if you’re hearing something, I’d love to hear from you. Maybe we can publish it. I could use a scoop.

AI Is About to Grade Its Own Advertising Homework

The IAB is developing standards for measuring ads served to or influenced by AI agents as platforms like OpenAI rapidly expand their advertising businesses. The bigger concern is who controls the measurement data. If AI platforms own the signals proving whether their ads influenced a purchase, advertisers could once again be forced to rely on Big Tech to grade its own homework.

In my opinion, standards are absolutely necessary, but we’ve seen this before. If AI platforms control both the advertising and the measurement, we risk recreating the same walled-garden problems the industry has spent years trying to fix. Standards only matter if they come with real transparency and independent measurement.

AI Shopping Is Driving Bigger Carts

Albertsons says customers using conversational AI search spend 10% more per order, while shoppers using AI for recipes and dietary preferences spend 26% more. That’s a pretty strong sign that conversational commerce can drive real revenue.

I’ve heard similar stats from Walmart. The ability to create AI shopping bots that help consumers make smarter choices and ultimately buy better products seems to be working, with increased cart sizes as the outcome. And yes, that probably means more purchases. In my opinion, that’s a great thing for retailers.

Live Streaming Is Looking Better for Advertisers

A new Magnite study shows just how valuable live streaming is becoming for advertisers, and it goes well beyond sports. An impressive 66% of consumers remembered an ad from their last live viewing session, while 59% said ads around live content made them more likely to buy from a brand.

Viewers are also sticking around before and after the main event, giving advertisers more opportunities to reach them. Even more interesting, 79% said they’re comfortable seeing the same or more ads during live programming compared to on-demand.

As more viewing shifts to streaming, live content is becoming a pretty compelling place for advertisers to spend.

Robotaxis Are About to Become AdTech

Robotaxis could quickly become a new advertising channel. With no driver, Waymo and Zoox can fill vehicles with screens, sponsored rides, local offers, and personalized promotions.

And considering they’re owned by Google and Amazon, it’s easy to imagine robotaxi inventory eventually becoming another option inside Performance Max or Performance+.

The bigger challenge may be consumer trust. As these services scale, regulators and consumers are increasingly questioning just how much more power Big Tech should have.
