FTC Says Amazon Secretly Juiced Its Ad Auctions by $20 Billion

The FTC and 22 state attorneys general are suing Amazon, alleging it secretly manipulated its ad auctions to charge advertisers more than they expected. The complaint claims Amazon introduced an undisclosed “soft reserve price” in 2019 that effectively raised the second-place bid, allowing Amazon to collect higher fees while advertisers believed they were participating in a traditional second-price auction.

The FTC estimates the practice may have generated more than $20 billion from advertisers. Amazon strongly denies the allegations, calling the lawsuit “misguided” and arguing its auction systems actually saved advertisers $8 billion between 2021 and 2025.

For an ad business that generated more than $68 billion last year, this is a massive case. The bigger question for the industry is how transparent these auctions really are when the platform also controls the rules.

ChatGPT Ads Hits $1 Billion in Under 200 Days

Everyone knew this was coming, and if you didn’t, you were probably living under a rock.

ChatGPT Ads has already hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, with tens of thousands of advertisers using the platform.

Now OpenAI is expanding self-service buying globally, SMBs are becoming a meaningful part of the business, and CPC and outcome-based bidding already account for the majority of campaigns.

The early performance numbers are interesting too: One ecommerce advertiser reportedly generated 3x ROAS, while a technology partner said 80%+ of ad-driven traffic came from new customers.

ChatGPT Ads is officially here. It wants a piece of the advertising market, and you better be ready.

Google Lost. AdX Stayed Put.

Google was found to have illegally monopolized key parts of publisher ad tech. That sounds like a massive loss until you get to the remedy: Google keeps AdX.

The DOJ wanted a breakup. Instead, it got mostly behavioral remedies. That is a very different outcome.

For ad tech, this is the part that matters. Google may have lost the legal argument, but it avoided the structural change that could have meaningfully reshaped the market. A monopoly ruling without a breakup leaves a lot of the existing machinery exactly where it was.

The Weather Company Thinks Your Forecast Is an Ad Signal

The Weather Company is pushing contextual advertising beyond “it’s raining, sell umbrellas.” Its research suggests weather can influence a consumer’s emotional state, and those shifts may affect how advertising performs. TWC is combining neuroscience research, weather data, and AI-powered measurement tools to determine when consumers may be more receptive to awareness, consideration, or purchase messaging.

The interesting part is the move away from identity and toward mindset. Ad tech has spent years trying to figure out who someone is. TWC is asking a different question: What is happening to them right now, and how might that affect what they’re ready to hear? If that proves measurable at scale, contextual targeting suddenly becomes a lot more sophisticated than matching ads to content.

Meta’s $18 Billion Teen Safety Deal Comes With a “You Too” Strategy

Meta will pay roughly $18 billion and impose major teen-safety restrictions, including two-hour limits, nighttime and school-hour restrictions, hidden likes, and fewer beauty filters.

Now Meta wants TikTok and YouTube to adopt the same rules. It’s a smart competitive move: If Meta has to play by tougher rules, it wants everyone else playing by them too.
